Teaching Ordinal Numbers

Because of the new Common Core, our district is placing less of a focus on certain topics in math. One of these areas is ordinal numbers. I think this concept is still important, so instead of spending an entire lesson on it, I created a mini-lesson for it.

I drew twenty different stick people on the board and made them all look slightly different. Then I labeled the first one and talked about what place the others were in. We labeled a few of the stick people together. Then the kids paired up and quizzed each other! They could quiz each other by:

1. Giving a description of the stick person and having the partner say the position (ie: What position is the purple long haired girl in?)

2. Giving a position and having the partner say the description of the stick person. (ie: Who is in the seventh position?)

Hope this idea is useful for you!
